RoboteShop, an online robotics retail store based in Australia, has recently lowered the price of one of its humanoid robot kits, called Metal Fighter. Standing about a foot tall, Metal Fighter is fully programmable (via a GUI or script), yet is easy enough for a beginner to build and operate. The robot was designed to serve as a versatile platform for learning about robotics, but also offers advanced users more ways to control and program the robot.

RoboteShop is now selling Metal Fighter for US$815, whereas the old price was US$911.

Metal Fighter is made by South Korean company Mini-Robot, which is also known for developing the popular Robonova humanoid robot. Metal Fighter is Mini-Robot’s second-generation humanoid robot, and includes newer, more advanced technology than Robonova. For example, its microcontroller can control up to 24 servos, and it’s more rugged, light-weight design makes it more resilient to falls. In addition, Metal Fighter has fewer parts, and should only take 1-2 hours to assemble with a screwdriver.

Metal Fighter can be programmed with either RoboScript (geared toward beginners) or RoboBasic, which is based on the BASIC programming language. The robot can be remotely controlled with the IR Remocon controller, which supports up to 4 different Metal Fighter robots using 4 separate ID protocols.

The Metal Fighter can also be retrofitted with several accessory modules, such as additional servos and brackets that turn the head and waist and enable the robot to grip its hands. LCD displays, various sensors, voice recognition modules, and R/C wireless controllers can also be added.

Besides Metal Fighter, RoboteShop also sells a variety of other biped, multi-legged, and wheeled/tracked robots in different price ranges.
