An all-robot cast is preparing to perform the classic musical “The Phantom of the Opera” in Taiwan on December 27. According to the China Post, the event could mark the world’s first robot theater.
Researchers at the Center for Intelligent Robots at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) designed four robots to play all the roles. Thomas and Janet, robots that can walk and mimic facial expressions with silicon facial muscles, star in the leading roles. The other two robots in the cast are Pica the painter and Ringo the jazz drummer, which move on two wheels.
Along with the musical, there will also be singing and a Chinese comic dialogue show, said Chen Shi-shuenn, president of NTUST.
All proceeds from the performance will be used for further related research. Lin Chyi-yeu, the head of the Center for Intelligent Robots, said that researchers plan to apply the hand-eye coordination technology of the entertainment robots toward the development of service robots.
