Roofus the robot plows roof snow
November 19, 2008
Michal Glogowski’s snow-shoveling robot is currently just a concept, but Roofus seems like it could definitely make human lives a bit easier.
Roofus is a robotic snowplow that can shovel and dump snow either autonomously or via remote control. The 220-pound robot is specially designed to clear off flat roofs, especially on those large commercial buildings that otherwise require a lot of man-hours.
The robot travels around the top of the building on caterpillar tracks, using sensors on each side of its body for navigation. It uses its teeth to break up ice and scoop snow, tossing it into a hopper. When it’s full, it travels to the side of the building and empties itself, repeating the process until the roof is cleared. Roofus contains two electric motors, and can haul up to 550 pounds of snow per load.
In the warmer months, Roofus can be fitted with various attachments such as lawn-mowing blades and street-sweepers.
